Zane felt like he was walking on air! Literally, he was sitting somewhere out in the courtyard of the school, a light snow falling into his hair from the winter snow, a dreamy look on his face. "Maere..." he whispered, smiling. She was his...he was hers. For all eternity...they were together...forever. He had claimed her as his own...left his own 'mark' upon her flesh to prove that she was...she was his forever and ever. And the only way it could break was if he died.

Serenity refused to believe this. She didn't want it to be real. She hissed in annoyance. Why was she always the one dumped. She never had luck with anyone . . . myabe it was because she was completely unlucky. She sighed. She decided, maybe it would be best to talk to Zane instead of fight. She didn't want to give him up, but if it was for his happiness, then she would do it. She hated Maere deeply for taking the one she loved. As much as she'd like to kill her, she wouldn't. "Maybe I'm not meant to find happiness," she murmered as she paced in Zane's direction, her head down.

Zane rose to his feet, twirling in the snow, giddy with excitement. He belonged to Maere! And Maere was his! He stopped and brought his hand to a burn mark on his arm and remembered the reason why they had to claim each other...he traced the brand Leylana had given him to 'claim' him as her new pet...and then grinned. "Thank YOU Leylana..." he breathed. "And I'll even thank you, Litrin..."

Serenity kept her gaze on the ground as she was near enough for Zane to hear her. Her breath was visible. She tried to force a smile on her face as she spoke, though she was trying to keep herself from crying. "Congratulations Zane. I hope you're happy." She bit her lip on the word happy. She didn't want to look him in the face. Never again did she want to suffer. "I was hoping . . . we could be . . . friends," her voice got quiet on the word friends.

"I'm more than happy! This is the happiest I've ever been in my life!" Zane cried, suddenly hugging Serenity tightly. "And of course, we can be friends!" he chimed, releasing her and twirling in the snow in delight and falling back contently, eyes half-closed.

Serenity blinked, blushing when she was hugged. 'Stop thinking about him like that' she thought to herself.
She sniveled slightly without meaning to. She felt a warm tear slide down her face for a moment, before she wiped it away. She nodded. "I-I'm glad you're happy," she managed to choke out.

"I just wish...you were happy with me." Zane whispered, still in complete bliss from the fact that he had claimed Maere and Maere had claimed him. "Mmm...oh yes, and guess what? My mother is actually Moisoko..." he said slowly.

"That's great." she found it easier to smile at that comment. She held her breath slightly. There was no way she could be happy. Not when she was giving up. Giving up the one she loved. She crossed her arms slightly. "I'm thrilled that you're happy Zane." she looked away when she said that. "I just can't be truly happy anymore . . ."

"That's not true...you can be happy! You have to give happiness a chance though!" Zane stated, eyes closing slightly. "We HAD to claim each other...we didn't really have a choice in the matter..." he stood up and helding out his arm where the burning brand still was there. "Leylana did this to me...branded me with her mark...afterwards she was really going to 'claim' me...like Litrin was going to do to Maere...'claim' her as his...but with my mark upon her flesh, there is no way he can claim her like that!"

Serenity nodded slightly. "I tried to give happiness a chance . . . . and the only thing that happens is I get left . . . no one cared about my feelings. I thought maybe . . . you would be different . . . but . . my point is at least you're happy. My happiness doesn't matter at all . . . as long as you're happy, and my brother, then I guess I don't have any need to try for happiness. Isn't there too much happiness in the world?"

"You're not thinking rationally!" Zane insisted. "Give happiness another try! For me at least..." he said. "I won't be able to sleep at night knowing your unhappy and not willing to give it another try!"

Serenity frowned, this time crying. "Don't you see . . . there isn't another chance for me! No one cares! Not one Fucking person! At least . . . not the way I thought you cared about me. I don't see the point in trying anymore . . . knowing I'd fail just makes it worse to think about."

"I DO care about you...but I care about Maere to! We claimed each other, and there isn't anyway to reverse our claims unless one of us died..." Zane said coolly. "Find somebody who likes you! My friend Linath has quite a few brothers you know...there's Doom and Bones-they're crazy-, Fade, Verin, Kalliel...Kalliel plays the violin, you know..." he said. "I'm trying to find somebody for you! I really am trying!"

"You are special . . . you're special to me Zane. There isn't a second I don't spend thinking about you or the day we met, and all the time we spent together. I want you to be happy Zane, so maybe if I got rid of myself for you, everything would be better for you . . . as though I never existed, right?" she smiled slightly. "I'm not that important . . . . but if you really want me to try . . . . I'll try once more, but it probably won't work out, Zane." she wrapped her arms around him for a brief second. "You must think I'm so childish."

Serenity cried a lot more, not wanting him to ever let go, but she knew that was impossible. "Zane .. . .I want to try for you . . . because I love you so much. . . but I don't know if I could start, nor even find a peice of happiness anymore." She frowned.
